Parkway Presents: Casual Fifth Taiko Dance and Drumming

The Parkway Council’s Parkway Presents series highlights Philadelphia’s rich cultural diversity.

This week Taiko drum and dance group Casual Fifth performs.

Casual Fifth, founded in 2020, is a Philadelphia-based Taiko and modern dance ensemble focused on creating innovative work rooted in the fundamentals and history of Japanese Taiko drumming and American Modern Dance. The ensemble is directed by Mac Evans and Alex Pfister, who learned these art forms studying with multiple Taiko and Modern Dance teachers and groups from NYC, Boston, Hawaii, and Japan. They are joined by friends, mentors, and mentees who round out the ensemble with their own musical and movement arts experiences. As an ensemble Casual Fifth pays homage to the origins of Taiko and Modern Dance and derives inspiration from these roots to create new works. Click here to learn more.

Hip Hop in the Park

The 2025 Oval is proud to host the 5th anniversary of the Hip Hop in the Park Festival.

This year’s headliners include RICH MEDINA, COSMO BAKER, DJ JS1, CRAIG G and SAT-ONE, who will be joined by other performers from Philadelphia, Virginia, New York, and Florida.

This week Cumbia Klezmer Punk group, Las Mariposas Galácticas, performs.

Las Mariposas Galácticas is an 8-piece Cumbia Klezmer Punk band based in Philadelphia. Drawing on the members’ South American and Jewish roots, the band creates a unique diasporic sound that gets audiences dancing with rebellious joy. Honoring their Indigenous Andean musical ancestries and blending it with punkified ancient Jewish melodies, they perform a mix of original compositions and classic tunes that span languages, cultures, and genres.

Brazilian Night

Brazilian Night is an evening of free, family-friendly, Brazilian performances including a mixture of music, dance, and capoeira. Organized by Project Capoeira, a not-for-profit organization that preserves, develops, and shares capoeira (a Brazilian folk and martial art) and uses it as a vehicle to promote other Brazilian arts and preserve Brazilian culture.

Brazilian Night is the precursor to Brazilian Day Philadelphia, a free festival on September 7.

Portrait Photography Workshop with Donald E. Camp

Photographer Donald E. Camp joins InLiquid at Maja Park to lead a portrait photography workshop. Using thermal printing cameras, Camp will lead attendees through the stages of portrait photography, and guests will get to take their work home with them. Audience members should plan to arrive at 5:30 and stay for the entirety of the workshop, as Camp will be leading guests through a step by step process. Family Fun Day with Kith + Kin

Join Kith + Kin and friends for a family fun day at The Oval!

Kith + Kin will host interactive, community building, family programming for little ones and their families.

Programming starts with Ms. Mariah of Little Yoga Squad for a playful family yoga session filled with movement, music, and mindfulness. Designed for all ages and abilities, this 30-minute class invites families to stretch, breathe, and connect together through fun yoga poses and interactive games.

Then, children's storyteller Thembi Palmer will bring attendees on an interactive movement adventure that goes beyond a typical read-aloud. Her captivating story is guaranteed to get children—and adults—on their feet, discovering new ways to move as the words come to life. Prepare for an action-filled experience, from freezing in place to uncontrollable itching and joyful twirling, ensuring active engagement and memorable fun.

The afternoon will close with family favorite, Mister John’s music, who will create magical moments while boosting motor skills and language development. Through music, rhythm, and movement, infants and toddlers will experience and learn about self-expression, teamwork, sharing, and empathy.   

Kith + Kin will be on the sidelines throughout, with a collaborative activity for all to enjoy.

All are welcome, though this program is most suited to infants and toddlers and their families.

Soccer Shots is an engaging children’s soccer program for ages 2 to 8. Visit the Oval this Sunday for age-appropriate soccer skills, character-building, and FUN! This program offers three activities focused on the ages below:

  • MINI (Ages 2–3): A high-energy program introducing fundamental soccer principles like using your feet, dribbling, and basic rules. Children enjoy fun games, songs, and positive reinforcement as they experience the joy of playing soccer.

Community Yoga by Yoga Habit is back. This class is for all-levels and full of movement and breath.

  • Remember to bring your own yoga gear: Mat, Water, Towel, etc.

  • Our classes are beginner friendly. Every class is designed to be modified based on your experience and how you’re feeling at the moment. You can take it easy when you’re getting started (or just want to relax) and you can kick it up when you’re feeling energetic or simply want a challenge.

Mondays with Maja Jazz Concert (New Date)

Join the Parkway Council in Maja Park for a series of free Mondays with Maja jazz concerts. Be sure to bring your own blanket or chair, a picnic, and kick off summer on the Parkway.
